J: Who were you before you met Mitsu? What I remember from your story is that you came to Peru from Germany to study...
V: I was very normal. I think now I am not so normal. Before, I was studying, I had friends in Germany. I always felt like going a little bit out of the ordinary but not too much out of the ordinary. I was quite shy before. I had nothing to do with what I do now, with spirituality. Just a little bit, my parents have always been hippies, always alternative. And within all that I was trying to find my way. That has been the biggest question of my life, what do I want to do?
I was very afraid of one day ending up in a normal job, being a slave to society. I studied psychology because I had to do something, in order to then do something different, more alternative.
I think I had nothing clear in my path, I had a lot of doubts. Something I had that I don't have anymore were depressive phases from time to time. I didn't know why, I lacked a purpose in life.
J: I hear you used to have depressive phases and now you don't?
V: No. I had them during the years I was with Mitsu from time to time and less and less and less and less. And not anymore. Normal sadness but not depression for a few days, not that anymore.
J: Many people in the modern world go through depression and stages of existential crisis. I know your life has changed a lot since you began your journey with plants and working with Mitsu as well. He has been your partner but would you also say he has also`been your teacher?
V: Yes definitely, when I met him he was in a way the white prince on the horse. The classic tale of what a woman wants because he had all the answers I wanted. I saw that my life didn't have the meaning I wanted and suddenly when we met, he had all the answers I was looking for.
I remember every day I would say to him:
"Hey, can I ask you a question, how is it with reincarnation, how is it with that subject...?"
I asked him everything and everything made a lot of sense. I remember that for a long time he was like my hero during those years and definitely my medicine teacher, everything I learned was with him, so he was my teacher and my partner, a little bit of everything.
(By this point in the story Veronika had left Peru to continue her life in Germany. Mitsu had decided to end the relationship because the physical distance was too much).
—----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
V: I remember one time I was meditating and writing in my room when the message came to me clearly that I had to go back to Peru or South America because my path was there. I don't know what, I don't know how but through there is my path. I decided to go back to Cusco because I didn't know where else to go. I didn't think I would be with him again because it was over but I didn't know where else to go so I decided to go that way. But another message came from the spirits, I don't know how, telling me that we had to be together. I didn't want to be together because he had already hurt me a lot with his decision to end the relationship. But the message that came told me that together we could achieve much more for the world than one for the other separately. I said to myself "No, I don't want to," but I listened.
A few weeks before I made the decision to return to Michi Hampi I told Mitsu and of course there came all the excitement. He agreed to pick me up.
Something crazy happened when the plane was landing. There was so much energy, so much movement that when the plane came down in the valley of Cusco, there was such a strong wind that it could not land. So I had to go around, we went all the way to Arequipa. We got off in Arequipa, we got on again for Cusco, I arrived much later and there we met again.
And well we took a couple of weird days getting to know each other again until we decided that yes we were going to be together again.
Since that moment four years ago...
J: I want to pause here... It had been a while since Mitsu cut you out. Yet you had courage to seek him out in a certain way, how did you come to commit to a life with him?
V: It was not a commitment, commitment. Firstly, I didn’t go to Peru to be with him, I went to Peru because I knew my path was there and I didn't know where else to go. So I came with that intention, to just be in the house (Michi Hampi) and learn more about the medicines that I had already taken then before.
I remember we were both in the cab not knowing how to react, we didn't even know whether to hug or how to relate to each other. The question of where I was going to sleep brought me to sleep in his bed and of course we hugged again but there was still no commitment. Yes we were together hugging but the commitment came months later.
We were together, yes, there was infatuation and feelings as before. But there was something inside me that wouldn't let me commit. I didn't know what it was. I was always looking for an open relationship because I didn't want to commit to a person. I would say, "How am I going to know he's the right one for me? There are so many men in the world, maybe someone else is correct for me." So I didn't know if it was a forever yes, for now it was okay, but I don't know if it was a yes forever. It wasn’t until other men came to the house and I felt attraction, that I began feeling weird and there I asked Grandma Ayahuasca at some point about my older brother.
I have a brother three years older. When I was born it was very difficult for him because he was the king of the family, the first of the family, of everyone. Then I arrived and all the attention went to me. I took away his position as king so we had a very difficult relationship for many years. It’s not that he would hit me but he bothered me every day, it was very difficult for me. The medicine showed me that he was the one who broke my heart as a child and that is why I did not want to commit to someone else. So I wrote him a letter trying to mend the relationship with my brother. I had been in Peru for a couple of months, at that time they only gave me 6 months and I didn't know how to stay longer. The idea of getting married was in the air but I said, "Get married? I never ever wanted to get married let alone for the purpose of a visa. Wow."
Mitsu at some point said to me, "Listen, I want to know now if you want to be with me. I don't want to be with someone that is a yes and a no. If I am with someone, I am with that person because it is forever.”
And I said, "But forever is too long, forever is a long time, how will I know?" And in the end I decided that yes, I'm going to try it, we're going to do it, and we got married. There wasn't as much commitment as I feel toward him now but there was the decision to do it and we got married.
J: The photos you showed me in Guatemala of your marriage, with the alpacas, were they from that time?
V: Yes, 3 and a half years ago.
J: Why do you say you have more commitment now?
V: Because before I couldn't imagine being with someone for so long. It's also the longest relationship I've ever had in my entire life and I've discovered how amazing it is to be with someone for so long. Before I couldn't imagine it, I had never lived with a partner together in the same apartment.
And now with time I see that you get to know each other so well, it's like your best friend, it's the person you can always confide in, you discover things together, you do amazing things together and we write a story together.
I never had that before. It's hard to describe because we are always together and it's incredible. Now I see the beautiful part of having a relationship and I also know now that everything always works out.
Mitsu wanted to have children and I didn't. I see that it is simply a decision to be with someone forever. To really commit yourself it doesn't help to think "Hmm I'll see..." or something like that, there's always a solution to every problem. I can always go get help from a therapist for whatever. It is simply a decision and you are much calmer knowing that it is so. In a way it's also like security to know that in 50 years we're still going to be together, that we're still going to kiss each other before eating, little things like that are very sweet. Thinking that someday I may have another partner, I wouldn't want to do that, only if it were necessary.
J: I hear there are no more doubts in you?
V: Good question. Doubts are always good to help reaffirm. I was just having doubts recently. I wanted to imagine inside my head what it would be like if we split up. But then I didn't like what I imagined. I said, "No, no, no, no better to solve it this way." And I think that was the ultimate reaffirmation. Now after that, no there are no more doubts.
J: It is very wise what you say, when doubts come, it is an opportunity to reaffirm the commitment. Was the act of getting legally married not so much for the commitment of love but more for practical reasons?
V: Both. Without the practical reason I would not have married, I would’ve given myself more time but it’s cool to have your friend there, it reaffirms it a bit more, it’s no longer just a thing, I have a ring now. Now after a few years I’ve taken on his last name, before I hadn’t.
J: What you have shared about Mitsu toward you is that he has been very clear about wanting to have a life partner. This is something that tends to be very traditional in shamans, in people who practice some form of ancient spirituality.
I have found in my travels that the union between man and woman is an important base for advancing on the spiritual path.
Recently I shared space with an indigenous Kogui family in the Sierra Nevada of Colombia. I was there with Kane, my partner at the time. The last day before we left, Jose Martin gave us a special bracelet to emphasize our union and bless our relationship. The bracelet serves as a protection so that our relationship will not break. (*include link to poem*)
During this trip to the Sierra Nevada I also met a friend I had crossed paths with in Ecuador. He told me that he had been getting very close to the Koguis; he had been working with them for many years as an anthropologist. He had reached the point where the elders told him that he could no longer advance his knowledge with them until he returned with a partner.
I see then that many people from wise natural cultures place importance on having a partner. Yet in the modern times we live in, there are several factors that clash with traditional commitment.
My question to you is even though you are in a traditional relationship, how do you maintain your freedom and autonomy?
I ask because I know you two and I know that freedom plays a big part in your relationship....
V: Since we met, Mitsu saw that I left for Germany, he had to let me go completely. And then when we parted it was also complete freedom.
I think it is the greatest form of love, the unconditional, to say to the other, "Hey if you don't want to be with me you are free to leave at any time." I think we both know that, that we are free. Of course, from time to time there are things that one of us doesn't like, but freedom is there anyway. We take each other's feelings into account but we take responsibility for our own.
Underneath that we do know that we are free. For example this year when I left for Germany with Puma (son), just the two of us in March, it was a super spontaneous decision. I told him, "Mitsu I want to go, I almost have my flight." And he wasn't so happy with the decision. We had just come back here after a long pandemic trip, there was a lot of work here at home, especially during those 3 weeks. It was very stressful for him, he was burdened with too much work and I was happy with my family in Germany. But he would never have said no.
J: That's key!
To be in a sacred union is to center in the understanding that you are both choosing to be with each other and that you are also free to make decisions outside of the relationship.
When you have disagreements or fights, how do you fight?
V: Hehe, good one. On a trip to Lima a couple of months ago we had a disagreement on the way. One of us said something to the other, emotions ran high and then we were both unhappy.
And at that point I said, "Hey Mitsu, you know what? I think the best thing is that when we realize we are not well, the best thing is not to say anything to each other. Nothing at that moment. We should find our space until the emotions calm down because you know when you feel real bad inside, everything that comes out of your mouth, comes out of high emotions, you can’t take back the words you say. You can hurt me this way."
So I'm at least trying (it doesn't always work) to not get carried away by my emotions, I'd better wait a little while and then resolve the situation more calmly.
J: And what do you do in those moments to stop the reactivity?
V: I take a breath. I don't say anything. I tell myself, "Don't say anything, don't say anything, don't say anything, don't say anything, you want to tell him I don't know what, hurt him with your words, it’s better to not say anything."
I look for my space and there I do everything I can, breathe, distract myself, or go to the river. I do everything that is good for me. I go to the river a lot. I love going to the river because I talk to myself about situations. And there I solve things. Something very interesting happened to me, it might interest you in terms of communication.
I know that everything that bothers me is about my inner self. But still sometimes things need to be said. So I'm in between that, letting Mitsu be, even if he suddenly does things I don't like, and wanting to communicate about it. So I learned that the best thing to do is to tell God.
I come here to this rock and I light a candle because I know that I would not get anywhere telling Mitsu since he is the way he is. Well some things I do communicate but there are other things that don't make sense to communicate them because he is the way he is and I am not going to control him either. So I tell it to the universe, I give it to God and so by talking out loud I resolve it. But I have to talk about it, I have to communicate it to someone because otherwise it accumulates here in my throat.
J: You convey to me a feeling of liberation. Coming to the river, lighting a candle and just talking to let off steam is extremely liberating. And I also hear that you exercise discernment. I imagine that through all the time together in relationship, discerning between what to present directly, like which behaviors are worth asking to change and which things would just cause misunderstandings, you’ve learned the difference.
It takes time and a commitment with oneself to reach the point of non-reactivity. I cannot change the other but I can take responsibility for my part of the disagreement and from there act, unburden myself from a compassionate place, either with my partner or alone, it always depends.
V: There is something I’ve observed that Mitsu does during ceremonies that I like.
Sometimes there are people who do things during ceremonies that you don't like. For example, someone will suddenly stand up during a ceremony while everyone else is seated. So Mitsu will stand there on the other side as the Heyoka (sacred clown). It's not that it’s bad to stand up but to stand up for a whole hour all of a sudden is kind of weird, it feels weird because there is one person in the group doing something else.
So instead of going and saying, "Hey brother, sit down please." Mitsu speaks to those people through the third eye. And through the medicine, what happens is that the moment he tells the person telepathically, it’s like telling it to space, to the universe, they receive the message, they listen, without having to interfere and without having conflict. So I also feel that sometimes it is more powerful to talk to him in meditation.
There are several things I have said to Mitsu in spirit that have with time been resolved. The issue is in the air, it wants to heal. It is much more effective if he realizes it without me telling him because this is where full comprehension can take place within him.
J: Communicating directly with the spirit of someone I’m having conflict with is a wise practice. This is energetic work that also requires one to let go by giving it up to God. It is saying, "I am going to express myself. I'm going to ask him for something to change. But needing to know when or how, this I release."
Maybe days, weeks, months go by, depending on the conflict and the person deciding to let go of control over the situation, suddenly experiences magic happen. It’s been resolved! This process requires patience. *Hehehehehe* Patience, trust and a deep connection with oneself. This practice inspires me. I will practice it more because I know it works, I will anchor it in my life, I will trust more.
V: It's worth the discipline. This is the biggest insight I've had recently. Before I always thought to do a little exercise every day, to do some kind of meditation every day. I would do it sometimes but without consistency, it never paid off. Now I am listening to myself and loving myself more, having more discipline, working more on the masculine part of me.
Now in my cell phone I have a list of 6 or 7 things that I am going to do every day. And every day I practice guitar, do sports, etc... I see the results after only one week. I see incredible results. It really works, you just have to do it. You just have to listen to yourself. You have to work on the firmness, the discipline, the masculine part and wow...it's working really well for me.
J: Yes, thank you for saying that because I believe you’re speaking to a balance theme. It's something that I and all people can receive, listening internally and taking daily consistent action, finding our balance of masculinity, discipline.
V: Yes, that has changed my life. Following my instinct, following my impulse and really listening to myself even though it's really hard.
For example, something very strange happened to me in the last mushroom ceremony. I told you earlier that I had a sexual block, more to do with my body, not really to do with Mitsu. I’ve had it since before I met him. I felt that this block was in my cells and that I haven't worked on it yet.
I kept telling myself that someday, I didn't know when or how, would figure it out. During the last 5 ceremonies when I started singing, my voice became blocked. I could hardly sing and I didn't know why. I asked the mushrooms last Saturday and they told me,
"Well you know that the throat chakra is very much related to the sexual chakra. You have a sexual issue that you have not resolved. You could resolve it by disciplining yourself every day, practicing meditations, doing exercise. This is how you can resolve it."
J: Yes! The jaw is directly connected to the vagina. The jaw and pelvis (the same is true for men) are physiologically connected and the alignment and relaxation of each profoundly affects the other.
I’d like to ask you more about your personal path with plants. Starting with this last ceremony, when you say that the mushrooms gave you that message, was it a voice you heard, was it an understanding, was it a feeling?
V: When I am in balance, when I am with my emotions and feel peace, not only in ceremony but also outside of ceremony, I enter a state of intuition or instant channeling. It is not a voice from outside, it is an intuition, an understanding from within. It is as if I answer my own questions within me, but I have to be in my center and without many emotions, well balanced. In my day to day life I move more intuitively and fluidly with intuition, and well, medicine reinforces that state. Sometimes when you ask the medicine a question and a lot of thoughts come, you wonder if it is reality or if it is just the head saying that. In this case I felt that what I received was true. It could also be because I didn't like the message or because it just made sense. It was an intuitive response.
J: I understand you clearly, thank you for describing it that way. Was there a moment when you said that your path of healing, of expansion, of work, of life is with master plants?
V: Hehehehehe
J: Was there a ceremony where you realized this was your life path or was it that being with Mitsu little by little you came to that realization?
V: Yes, exactly this.
I would never have chosen this path for myself.
J: For many people it’s rare to see that a couple wants to maintain a high level of autonomy. What I hear with you is that in the beginning since Mitsu was such a teacher (well we are all teachers among us) but I mean during all these years of being the partner of a shaman, having joined Mitsu, leaving the German culture for the Peruvian one,I imagine that in the beginning you were more on the listening side…
V: Yes, it's something that I also see in my family that also happened with my mother. You meet a man and you give yourself to his life and do everything for him. For example, my dad is a foreigner so she went to live on the farm with him and his mom. For many years she worked on the farm, the farm, the farm. She completely adapted to my dad's situation.
She also had to learn to free herself again, find her space and do other things. It's like the same story in a way. The only difference is that I am learning faster, it took her more years to get to this point.
J: I see this acceleration of learning among the life stories of our generation. We question what our parents lived through, we recognize as such that somehow we are reliving it and we start the journey to discover that it can be done differently, we rewrite the story.
V: It's really crazy that you bring this up because you know how they say we cure our mom or dad through our partner. Well I used to say, "That's weird. I'm nothing like Mitsu's mom. I think I'm different." And what happened is when I had Puma, his birth completely changed me, it gave me a lot more strength. Then I asked Mitsu's mother, who is a very strong woman, very masculine, if she had always been like that or if she used to be more timid. She said that she had been very shy before she had Mitsu, her first child.
Having to support her first child without a father, the father had left, meant the birthing of her masculine strength, she had to become a warrior to survive. So that's when it all changed for her.
I also became different being a mom. I started to observe things inside me that are inside her as well. I realized we are quite the same, or that we share a few qualities that have to do with the same processes. So I realized that Mitsu does heal his mom through me. The healing is different, it’s a smoother process.
At the same time of realizing this I began to think this also meant that I am healing my dad through Mitsu. I’m still inquiring into exactly what aspects but yes it is all very interesting.
—---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
J: Ayahuasca has a maternal spirit and Wachuma is like a grandfather.
What has Ayahuasca and Huachuma helped you to heal personally?
V: I think it's hard to recap all that this medicine has taught and healed me because it’s been so much. Ayahuasca is definitely more connected to all the feminine attributes. First, it works the mind a lot more and I don't know if it's because perhaps we women are more mental. Men I think tend to be more action oriented, more doers and that's how Wachuma is. It gives you the will to want to do things without thinking about it too much. While Ayahuasca heals your mind more, that's why you sit and lie down and do nothing during an Ayahuasca ceremony.
Ayahuasca works on receivership, to be there and surrender, this is also a very feminine quality, surrendering to life or to what the medicine gives you. Receiving.
Men give and women receive, like sexuality, this is the clearest example to express all those qualities.
So if you resist Ayahuasca it is going to be difficult or you won’t feel anything during ceremony. She’s taught me to give up control, to receive and just do nothing. Doing nothing is also a women's quality, meanwhile men always like to do, do, do, do, do.
The balance of doing nothing teaches us to combat resistance. We can learn a lot about our emotions. To allow feelings to flow and simply observe them permits the flow of life to come to you. Well I don't know how to explain this bit just yet, it’s not clear within me.
Ayahuasca has helped me with past sexuality issues because she heals the lower chakras a lot.
For example, all the relationships with my former energetic partners had to be cut in the ceremony with a weight. And there Ayahuasca helped me more than Wachuma.
I connected with women power, with intuition.
Now the way I work, well, being in service is different from receiving, you still heal and learn, but now I am learning how to give myself to the force of Ayahuasca without controlling it, that way she sings through me, it becomes a true channeling.
Wachuma helped me a lot in terms of my relationship with my father, in my relationship with the masculine, with doing. I used to block myself a lot when it came time to do things, I used to overthink, "But how will it turn out?" Being in the here and now, in the plane of here, that's how Wachuma works.
I used to worry about what others thought, I did things to please others, I unconsciously believed that to receive love from others, I had to behave a certain way. This has been one of my biggest themes in life. The mornings after working with Wachuma especially helped me to relax. I became like an animal, just doing my own thing, being completely here, connecting with the fire, with the food and also with others. While Ayahuasca connects you with yourself, Wachuma connects you with the feelings of others.
J: Your lifestyle for several years now has been to be in ceremony on a weekly basis with Mitsu supporting but also guiding. What can you share about being partnered with a shaman?
V: Life is much more intense. A ceremony is very intense, especially at the beginning, it can feel like a year. People feel it when they arrive but for us it is also intense. Well now not so much anymore, you get used to it at some point. There's so much transformation and extreme situations, it's like you're doing extreme sports all the time with your partner. You always think, "You're going to die..." Then, we're still together. They are experiences that unite us, we go through tough experiences that strengthen our relationship as a couple, it sustains us as a couple.
And of course the intuition we have in our work, we communicate without words, we don't need to talk to understand one another in a ceremony because everything is through telepathy. We’re a great team, we work very well together.
J: I moved here to the Sacred Valley in part to connect with the wisdom of the plants. The two of you embody a unity of masculine and feminine balance. I see that your commitment to live within this balance has allowed you to create a stable foundation, you’re able to help and serve many people.
For me, the last step of a healing process is to create steady expansive relationships. Thank you for sharing with me a little of your journey, your story and what you move through to maintain your sacred union with Mitsu alive. Thank you Vero.
V: Thank you for asking!

V: Respiro. No digo nada.
Me inspiras.

Siempre piensas, “Voy a morir…”
Muchas gracias Vero.
V: ¡Gracias por preguntar!
